OET Medicine Exam Structure

Four sub-tests, each scored 0–500. There is no overall grade — every sub-test is assessed separately. Target: Grade B (350+) per sub-test. Confirm exact requirements with the employer or chamber in Austria.

Section Time Questions Details
Listening ~50 minutes 42 Consultations, briefings, presentations. Healthcare topics. 30+ marks is typically Grade B.
Reading 60 minutes 42 Workplace notices, guidelines, longer medical articles. 30+ marks is typically Grade B.
Writing 45 minutes 1 letter Referral / transfer / discharge letter from case notes. Assessed on: purpose, content, conciseness & clarity, genre & style, organisation & layout, language.
Speaking ~20 minutes 2 roleplays Doctor–patient roleplays. Recorded and assessed later; the interlocutor does not grade. Language and clinical communication both count.
Critical Notes
Grades: A 450–500 · B 350–440 · C+ 300–340 · C and below do not meet the benchmark. Scores move in 10-point steps.
No averaging: A high score in one sub-test does not compensate for a low score in another. Each result stands alone.
OET Medicine version: Doctors take the Medicine version — referral letters and doctor–patient roleplays.
